Remodeling and Renovation

Earlier I have talked about the various aspects of remodeling. A little bit about the company and its services. I also presented overviews of kitchen and bathroom remodeling like the way these changes are carried out both technically, visually and physically. In this blog I’ll talk about another area of specialty of my company which is renovations.

The words “remodel” and “renovate” are often used interchangeably. However for us at Kevin Kahl Constructions as a design and build professional company, both these terms means two very different things. A remodel involves changing the use of space. When the structure and style of a space is completely transformed, this is considered a remodel. If you want to change the layout of the room and re-configure the floor plan, you are remodeling. In a kitchen remodel, for instance, you may decide to combine the kitchen with the living room to create an open concept kitchen layout. You may also decide to install a kitchen island to create more functional space for cooking. Whatever it is, remodeling breathes new life into the room giving the space a whole new look and feel. So you see, “Remodel” basically means to alter the structure of an existing room/space.

Renovations on the other hand are completely different as it is generally done on a larger scale than remodeling. Renovation means updating the existing site as per the newer requirements of the customer or as per law. It ranges from periodic restorations of the property to adding a new section. An addition in the existing property usually involves wood/concrete constructions, new cabinets, doors and windows installations, new electrical layouts and plumbing updates. As you see, “Renovate” means to restore to good condition and to make it new again. In the world of home construction this includes re-construction, re-painting, re-facing cabinets, re-wiring, installing new light fixtures, other finishes and much more. The original design in not altered drastically but it is updated to a new standard. Renovating you house makes the space more attractive. It also substantially increases the value of the property or condo. Because renovating involves complex design considerations as well as construction, electric and plumbing changes or modifications, it typically costs similar or more than remodeling. It is important to consult as experienced design build contractor or an architect before you begin a renovation project. As you start thinking about a renovation, you will quickly notice how many companies there are seeking your business. Do you want a simple refinish or a complete reface? Do you want to keep the construction as it is or you want to make an extension? These are the factors which are to be kept in mind while starting a renovation project. This will make the budget for the project as it can range from affordable to outrageous. Sometimes it might require a new blueprint to be made to make the necessary changes to the already constructed house. This is a very technical aspect as it is related to the integrity and rigidity of the existing structure. Renovations involve newer electrical laying and changes as well as modifications to the existing plumbing system. Homeowners might not think to consult an expert while doing so but it is strongly advised to hire a professional. As it is said, a stitch in time saves nine.
